Contract Software Engineer (Backend / Platform)

Location/Type: Remote (US); Full-time, contract/independent consultant (NYC area is a plus )

The role

We’re looking for a senior-level backend/platform engineer to join as a full-time contractor, working exclusively during the engagement.

You’ll be responsible for designing and shipping critical backend features that sit close to… core ledger and funding systems —things like notice distribution, beneficiary tracking, and withdrawal management. You’ll work directly with… senior engineers and company leadership, with a lot of ownership.

This is a good fit if you’ve seen what “real scale” looks like at a modern fintech (e.g., Robinhood, Cash App, Stripe, Coinbase, etc.) and want to bring that bar to an earlier-stage company where your work is central to the product.

What you’ll do

• Design, implement, and maintain backend services

• Own APIs and event-driven workflows that connect custodians, TPAs, payroll providers, and internal tools

• Work closely with product, ops, and compliance to translate messy real-world constraints into robust systems

• Build “engines, not scripts”: automation that can be reused and extended, not one-off hacks

Desirable competencies

• Strong experience with modern backend frameworks, API design, and event-driven systems

• Strong architecture design and problem-solving skills

• Proficiency in any of the following: Kotlin, Rust, Java, Go, C/C++, Python, Ruby, or TypeScript

• Experience working with MySQL or PostgreSQL

• Experience with modern build systems and cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure)

• Nice to have: experience with workflow-based systems (e.g., Temporal, Cadence, or similar) and comfort modeling long-running business processes

• Commitment: Full-time (40 hrs/week) , dedicated… during the contract

• Location: Remote in the US; NYC desirable for periodic in-person work with the team (occasional travel may be needed if not located in NYC)
