HVAC Design Engineer
Position Summary:
The HVAC Design Engineer’s primary function is to provide the mechanical designs needed to estimate, fabricate, and install new or replacement heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration systems. System designs can vary from commercial comfort heating and cooling, ventilation, refrigeration, and industrial process systems. Design criteria include energy efficiency, cost per square foot, and meeting design code requirements. The engineer will also be tasked with problem solving design problems for existing systems and developing a solution.
Job Functions:

Prepares dimensional and/or layout drawings for installation and fabrication of sheet metal and
-
hydronic piping systems.

Review contract documents (drawings, specifications, submittals, etc.) for incorporation into coordinated drawings.

Revise and update existing drawings reflecting design or coordination changes.

Works closely with estimators to review and understand the scope and magnitude of all projects being estimated.

Reads and understands all project specifications to include “Plan and Spec” and “Design and Build” projects.

Utilizing knowledge of mechanical systems and appropriate software, performs a load calculation to develop the heating, cooling, and ventilation equipment requirements needed. This includes sizing for equipment, ductwork, and piping.

Works closely with temperature controls engineer to understand the building automation system needed to manage and operate the mechanical system design.

Works closely with sales engineers and estimators in selecting HVAC equipment to meet design criteria.

Utilizing knowledge of mechanical systems and appropriate software, performs an energy model to understand the energy needed to run the equipment designed to the heating, cooling, and ventilation requirements.

Works closely with estimator to design a mechanical system that meets a customer’s budget parameters.

May design several options to develop the most cost-effective system that meets design criteria.

Once a design is finalized, prepares dimensional and/or layout drawings AutoCAD/Revit for installation and fabrication of sheet metal and hydronic piping systems based on load and sizing calculations.

Works closely with project managers to review system design and installation criteria.

May be required to redesign system when unknown installation issues are discovered.

Assists projects managers by communicating with code authorities as required for approval of project plans.

Works closely with installation crew to communicate and understand system design specifications and installation requirements.

Works closely with installation crew reviewing any installation issues that may impact design performance.

Works closely with installation crew to document how the system was installed. Updates dimensional and/or layout drawings as actual built.
Supervisory Responsibility: None
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
-
Must possess a good working knowledge of system design with field and 3D coordination experience.

Working knowledge of mechanical HVAC systems to include chilled water and heating hot water systems and sheet metal.

In-depth ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints and specifications.
-
Must have a good working knowledge of applicable mechanical, building, plumbing, electrical & fire protection codes.

Must have a basic knowledge of industry standard construction accounting practices.

Highly proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Job Qualifications:

BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
-
Must possess AutoCAD/Revit knowledge and experience.
-
HVAC or construction industry preferred.
