About the Opportunity

Hirewell is partnering with a growing, established distribution company in the northern Chicago suburbs to hire a Report Writer. This role will lead the modernization of how the company reports, moving from static, request-driven reports to self-service analytics that help people answer their own questions and make better decisions. You’ll build on a modern cloud data platform, work closely with the data engineering and data science teams, and have a real say in reporting standards and how data is defined across the business.

What You’ll Do

• Partner with business stakeholders to understand the questions they need answered, the decisions they make, and the KPIs they track
• Translate those needs into clear reporting requirements
• Design, build, and maintain reports and interactive dashboards in a modern cloud BI platform
• Create self-service workbooks and curated, certified datasets so teams can explore data without waiting on IT
• Write and optimize SQL queries, views, and reporting data models in a cloud data warehouse
• Take stock of the current report inventory, then lead the retirement, consolidation, and migration of legacy reports
• Establish reporting standards, including naming conventions, visual design guidelines, and trusted data sources
• Define and document business metrics and KPIs so there is one consistent version of the truth
• Validate data accuracy and reconcile report results against source systems
• Monitor dashboard performance and query efficiency and cost, and tune as needed
• Manage workspaces, folder structure, and user access and permissions in coordination with IT
• Train and support end users on dashboards and self-service reporting
• Collaborate with data engineering and development teams to improve data pipelines and source data
• Resolve help desk cases related to reports and data access

What You’ll Bring

• 3 to 5 years of experience in report development, business intelligence, or data analytics
• Hands-on experience building dashboards in a cloud BI tool such as Tableau, Power BI, or Looker, with a willingness to learn a newer platform
• Strong SQL skills, including CTEs, window functions, and performance tuning, with experience querying and modeling data in a cloud data warehouse
• A solid grasp of data modeling concepts such as star schema and fact and dimension tables
• A proven ability to turn business questions into clear, actionable reports and visualizations
• Experience designing self-service reporting for non-technical users
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to present findings to both business and technical audiences
• Experience documenting report logic, metric definitions, and data sources
• Advanced Excel
• Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Business Analytics, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience
• A self-starter who works well independently and on a team, with strong attention to detail and the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Nice to Have

• Experience migrating reports from legacy tools such as SSRS, Crystal Reports, or Excel to a modern BI platform
• Familiarity with modern data stack tools such as dbt or Fivetran
• Experience with ERP or CRM data structures
• Python and Git or version control
• Exposure to supply chain, logistics, or distribution data
