Tech Ops / System Administrator
Hybrid Systems Administrator & Help Desk | Onsite – Northern Chicago Suburbs
Department: Technology Operations
Location: Libertyville, IL , 5 days per week
Work Hours: Early shift, starting between 5:30 and 6:00 AM; roughly an 8 to 8.5 hour workday
Level: Mid-level; open to candidates with strong, practical troubleshooting ability rather than a strict years-of-experience requirement
About the Opportunity
Hirewell is partnering with a growing distribution company to find a hands-on Tech Ops / System Administrator for their expanding internal IT team. This is a hybrid systems administrator and help desk role. Part of the job is keeping servers, VMware, and Microsoft-based systems running, and part of it is being the visible, responsive face of IT for end users across the business. The company is growing faster than its current IT support staff can keep up with, and this hire will add hands-on capacity now, with real room to grow into an informal leadership role over the existing support team as the department scales.
What You’ll Do
- Serve as the practical, hands-on IT generalist for the company’s network, covering day-to-day systems administration and end-user support
- Provide direct, visible support to onsite users, filling the gap left by not having a dedicated help desk
- Support hardware rollout and troubleshoot user issues as they arise
- Maintain and upgrade servers, including new hardware already in place
- Administer Windows-based systems, Active Directory, and Office 365
- Administer and support the VMware environment
- Monitor and maintain site technology, including resolving overnight issues so operations can start on time each morning
- Grow into leadership of the existing support staff as the role and team mature
What You’ll Bring
- Hands-on experience with Windows systems administration
- Experience with VMware
- Experience with Office 365 and Active Directory
- Strong, independent troubleshooting skills, with the ability to resolve day-to-day issues without heavy oversight
- Clear, effective communication with nontechnical end users
- Comfortable being visible and responsive to onsite users, rather than working only on infrastructure behind the scenes
- Located close enough to reliably support a 5:30 to 6:00 AM onsite start
Nice to Have
- Exposure to Azure
- Familiarity with warehouse or logistics systems terminology (not required; can be learned on the job)
- Prior mentoring or informal leadership experience
Work Environment
- Onsite, five days per week
- Reliable early-morning availability required
- Approximately an 8 to 8.5 hour workday
- Ability to lift, move, and install IT equipment as needed
