Supply Chain Manager

Responsible for leading, planning and managing all North American supply chain activities in the direct and indirect production of all company products. Develops, implements and controls purchasing policies, procedures and measurements for quality and performance. Works to constantly and consistently improve product quality, reduce product cost and shorten supply lead-time. Assumes primary responsibility for identifying, developing and controlling a world-class, high performing global supplier base to support Company growth and sales strategies.

Ensure all purchasing activities support and strengthen the strategic objectives of the overall organization. When costs or performance are out of line, or inefficiencies are discovered along the supply chain, the Supply Chain Manager must step in and negotiate better pricing, find alternative sources or solve the issues causing the inefficiency. The Supply Chain Manager works to streamline the business' supply-side activities to maximize customer value and gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace. The Supply Chain Manager represents an effort by suppliers to develop and implement supply chains that are as efficient and economical as possible.

Key Essential Functions:
Leadership & Team Management

  • Assures that areas of responsibility are properly staffed and coordinated and that personnel are adequately qualified, trained and supervised to perform their responsibilities effectively. Provides leadership and development to direct reports in order to build a high performance team that is constantly growing in capabilities and efficiency. Establishes annual performance and development goals for all direct reports and meets regularly to review progress. Perform annual performance reviews to document team performance and behavior. Ensures accountability, establishes clear responsibilities and processes for monitoring work and measuring results. Assures that any direct reports who are also managers/supervisors are also implementing and successfully executing the performance management process.
  • Assure all key work processes are fully documented, constantly updated and consistently followed to maintain a culture of consistently high performance throughout the organization.
  • Develops and manages purchasing, production schedules and planning systems to assure achievement of customer order delivery commitments with the goal of 100% on-time deliveries.

Key Supply Chain Management Responsibilities

  • Protect Simpson intellectual property with outside suppliers through the use of confidentiality agreements, standard operating procedures and regular inspections.
  • Proactively and consistently identify and develop new suppliers when improvements in cost, quality, speed of delivery and/or customer value can be achieved.
  • Develop and implement procedures to evaluate, monitor and report on supplier performance. Identify measure, analyze and report on key supplier performance and product quality metrics. Initiate corrective action or supplier replacement when necessary.
  • Lead in the negotiation of major purchases and purchase agreements with suppliers – in cooperation with the Director of Operations and Controller.
  • Visit key suppliers regularly, at least annually and preferably with the relevant buyers, to develop and maintain strong relationships with them.
  • Manage / coordinate the sales and operations planning process including supply / demand forecasting, inventory management, and on time delivery
  • Manage and / or execute procurement related functions (e.g., develop and implement contract management and procurement frameworks, sourcing strategies, negotiate agreements, draft and manage contracts, etc.)
  • Establish key performance indicators, monitor ongoing performance, and improve vendor performance against set goals.

Key Quality Responsibilities

  • Identify, measure, analyze and report on key quality metrics related to the manufacturing/purchasing functions including management of North American RMA programs with the goal of zero product defects delivered to customers.
  • Works with engineering to investigate product quality and manufacturing problems or defects to determine the most effective corrective actions.

Major Machine Manufacturing

  • Works with accounting to prepare and analyze after sale reports on the actual vs. expected costs and lead times for major machine orders. Reports results to senior management.
  • In cooperation with engineering, develop and maintain equipment quality control checklists/procedures. Assure that QC procedures are consistently and uniformly applied to all applicable machines and parts. Review completed major machine reports with the Director of Operations upon the completion of each project.

Required Education:

  • Minimum BS/BA in Industrial Management or a related field, or the equivalent experience

Required Experience:

  • Minimum 10-15 years of experience in manufacturing in positions of increasing scope and responsibility covering the following areas: materials management, procurement and vendor relations.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience supervising management level employees with worldwide scope
  • Minimum 5 years managing outside vendors.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with responsibility for +10M in procurement.
  • Minimum 5 years in production of capital equipment

Required Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to deliver expected results exercising influence and negotiation while not having direct reporting relationships.
  • Knowledge and operating ability of PC applications including MS Office Suite and related applications.
  • Experience working in an automated ERP environment
  • Thorough knowledge of industry standards production practices.
  • The proven ability to build, inspire and continually develop a cohesive team/department.
  • Excellent numbers aptitude
  • ISO 9000 experience a plus
