Salary Range: $100,000 - $120,000

The Assistant Director of Engineering is responsible for supporting the Director of Engineering to ensure the successful quoting and execution of projects.  Must lend support to Sales, by developing and designing innovative storage solutions for our Clients in a fast-paced environment.  The (ADE) provides recommendations related to operational improvement, and cost reduction.  

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assigns and communicates Engineering Tasks as it relates to System’s project quotes

  • Develop, collect, and review Engineering timesheets. 

  • Expense report approval and Time off request approval for project engineers. Ensure time off calendar is recorded and adequate coverage for the department is maintained.

  • Initialize and set-up Quote Kick-off meeting with Salesperson and assigned Engineer. Help determine / clarify directive and advise sales of current lead-times to discuss options up front prior to quoting. 

  • Shared responsibility for the review of projects, quotes, and drawings to ensure all quotes from manufacturing partners, vendors and subcontractors for accuracy and consistency. 

  • Continual development and updating of Engineering tools to allow for fast-paced budgetary quoting

  • Prepare Performance evaluations of Project Engineers.

  • Participate in hiring of Project Engineers and training the project team on tools and processes, skill development (coaching & training).

  • Shared responsibility for accurate bills of material and the performance management of vendors

  • Ensure clear line of communication with Sales to ensure customer expectations are met.

  • Determine best practices concerning the quoting and execution process

  • Assist with training the department on all software and available tools to successfully complete their assignments 

  • Partner with Sr. Director of Project Management and customers to develop long term relationships through customer education and generate additional sales opportunities.

  • Partner with Sr. Director of Engineering to oversee constant operational process improvement to streamline processes and organize workflow in the project engineering function and overall project operations department.

  • Must serve as a back-up to Director of Engineering during times of travel and vacation time. 

    Solution Development

  • Assist Sales with developing and documenting system specifications and design requirements 

  • Utilize experience within Material Handling industry to successfully meet the project requirements

  • Provide the bill of material (BOM), including sizing of all components, prior to obtaining competitive bids, to ensure the design meets all applicable building codes

  • Develop RFP’s for all Tier 1 categories

    • Review all bids from manufacturing partners and subcontractors for accuracy and consistency

  • Develop scope drawings, plan and elevation views, for Client approval and proposal submission

  • Summarize all costing information to Sales for proposal submission

  • Provide guidance to Sales regarding permitting, fire protection, life safety, and other relevant requirements.

  • Clearly communicate the project schedule including final engineering, manufacturing, transit time, installation, etc…

  • Recommends value-engineered options in assessing the cost effectiveness of customer project designs.

 

Project Execution

  • Assist REB’s project manager with procuring all required materials

    • Review all approval drawings from manufacturers for accuracy

  • Develop required permit submittal drawings

  • Obtain, and review for accuracy, any certified structural calculations and drawings

  • Develop comprehensive and detailed installation drawings

  • Accountable for the accuracy of all engineering aspects of the project including; all drawings, calculations, and BOM’s

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering or Associates Degree with additional applicable experience

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience designing material handling systems 

  • Strong written, verbal and listening skills

  • Expertise with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and MS Project

  • SAP experience a plus

  • Extensive use of AutoCAD

  • Ability to read and understand manufacturing drawings including quality requirements

  • Travel (5%) if required to take building field dimensions and attend meetings

  • Flexibility to work over 40 hours per week as necessary during peak workloads

  • Work on several projects simultaneously, in a fast-paced environment with daily deadlines

  • Occasional site to job site to obtain measurements, analyze rack collapses or unsafe conditions

  • Contribute to developing new and improved processes
